Residents in the affected towns of Lawrence/North Andover/Andover who have gas service from Columbia Gas should evacuate their homes immediately if they have not already done so. Gas lines are currently being depressurized by the company it will take some time.

Dozens of gas explosions tore through numerous homes in Boston late Thursday, leading to one reported death and mass evacuations of several neighborhoods. Massachusetts State Police responded to 70 reports of explosions, fires or gas odor in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover by 7:30 p.m., where at least 39 homes were on fire. Methuen Police Chief Joseph Solomon told the Eagle-Tribune that there were so many fires “you can't even see the sky.” Ten victims were being treated at Lawrence General Hospital, including one in critical condition and one with serious injuries, the hospital announced on Facebook. Patients are being seen for everything from smoke inhalation to traumatic blast injuries. Late Thursday, reports broke that one person had died after a home explosion. Authorities said Leonel Rondon, 18, of Lawrence, died after a chimney toppled by an exploding house crashed into his car. He was rushed to a Boston hospital but pronounced dead there in the evening. More than 60 houses were on fire after gas explosions north of Boston. (AP) The cause of the explosions wasn’t immediately clear. "It looked like Armageddon, it really did," Andover Fire Chief Michael Mansfield told reporters. "There were billows of smoke coming from Lawrence behind me. I could see pillars of smoke in front of me from the town of Andover." Authorities said Columbia Gas lines were being “depressurized” slowly but told any residents who used the service to leave their homes. Power and electric were also being shut off in the affected areas, according to police. Gov. Charlie Baker said state and local authorities are investigating but that it could take days or weeks before they turn up answers. "This is still very much an active scene," he said. "There will be plenty of time later tonight, tomorrow morning and into the next day to do some of the work around determining exactly what happened and why."
