A better analogy than Intuit:Microsoft would be Netscape:Microsoft. A built-in product that is "free" because it comes with the computer will kill off an add-on that costs extra. Sure, the "hardcore" gamers will want Voodoo, but they are a tiny fraction of the PC market. An investment thesis that cedes the mass market to Intel while claiming only the hardcore gamers for TDFX is not one that fills me with confidence. I like Voodoo as a product and TDFX as a company, but that isn't a reason to invest in it. For example, I've been a Mac user for over a decade, but that doesn't mean I should have invested in Apple over Microsoft. Sometimes mediocrity wins.
