Storms can be so capricious. One year when I was a boy there was a late spring blizzard with enormous drifts that blocked the roads, so schools were closed for several days. A month later the snowpack melted rapidly, with resulting floods closed schools for a week. Naturally this was incredibly exciting and fun for us children, who were somewhat oblivious to the widespread economic damage and scattered deaths.

I did learn one valuable lesson: one should never own residential property in a flood zone!
