Mason, >Could you clarify the point you're making?<

Historically the Dec btb has been UP from Nov. If for Dec 1997 it is DOWN from Nov, some on the Street may take that as an excuse to
punish semi equipment stocks.

I'm aware of most arguments against reliance on the btb#.
Some on the Street may not be.

News from Asia 1/16

All currencies except the won are up overnight against the dollar, and I think all markets except S. Korea also up. Generally strong sentiment for recovery right now, due to the Indonesian response, but very unstable.

Phillips, which does a lot of Asian business, said today that the flu will continue to affect their profits and also indicated that the situation could go either way at this point, i.e. nobody can tell if the recovery has started or if their will be additional troubles. A couple of Japanese banks going belly up would seriously destabilize the budding recovery. However, the spokesman also said that Phillips would continue its planned capital investments in semi equipment.

Unfortunately, these Western companies with the "long view" are going to stabilize prices in the semi equipment stocks. Oh well, there's still money to be made.
