De Beers opens Vancouver office

By PETER KENNEDY
Vancouver Bureau The Financial Post
De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd., the world's largest diamond mining concern, said yesterday it will open an office in
Vancouver.
The South African giant, which controls about 70% of the world diamond market, said it will use the Vancouver location to
further develop its mining and prospecting interests in Canada.
"We are looking for business,'' said George Burne, managing director of the company's new subsidiary, De Beers Canada
Corp.
A director of De Beers' powerful diamond marketing arm, the Central Selling Organization, Burne is moving from London to
run the Canadian operation.
De Beers is no stranger to Canada. The company's Toronto-based exploration subsidiary, Monopros Ltd., has been active
here for decades.
"But we have felt for some time that with Canada about to become a diamond producer, it was important to put De Beers'
name into Vancouver,'' Burne said.
Later this year, Canada will see its first diamond mine go into production when a $700-million project by Dia Met Minerals
Ltd. and BHP Diamonds Inc. is complete.
Dia Met's Ekati mine in the Northwest Territories is expected to account for 3% of the world's rough diamond output by
weight and 5% by value.
"Obviously, we'd like to market their diamonds, but that's up to them,'' Burne said.
The new office will also put De Beers closer to a potential diamond mine being explored in the Northwest Territories by
Vancouver-based Aber Resources Ltd. and partner Kennecott Canada Inc.
Mining industry officials aren't surprised to see De Beers beef up its presence in Canada.
"Vancouver is developing into a little financial diamond centre,'' said Gerald Prosalendis, spokesman for Dia Met, which is
based in Kelowna, B.C. "So it makes sense for them to be located in Vancouver.''
Nicholas Oppenheimer, De Beer's newly appointed chairman, is scheduled to be in Vancouver next Monday to open the
office.

The globe and mail did a piece today on the new debeers diamond office in vancouver. they say debeers is concerned canadian diamonds may not be sold through the cartel and that would under cut the market. The office the article continues will try and keep us in the fold.
