The beauty of the hybrid fuel cell is that the voltage could be relatively low which would make the number of cells much less and smaller. Then a simple DC to DC converter with 85 to 95% efficiency jumps the voltage up to around 200 volts for the vehicle batteries. Because you could operate the fuel as a hybrid at a much lower voltage than the electric drive motor would greatly reduce the cost to produce a practical vehicle. I imagine that fuel cells for utility power require many cells to achieve a high enough voltage to backfeed power lines. But a fuel cell for a hybrid vehicle need only generate around 4 to 8 KW which is small compared to numbers I have seen for Ballards fuel cell.

I think I may be onto something useful here IMHO.
