Omnitel Topped 2.5 Million Clients On Jan 9
AP-Dow Jones News Service

MILAN -- Italy's Omnitel Pronto Italia, a consortium led by Olivetti SpA, said Thursday it topped 2.5 million clients on Jan. 9.

At the end of 1997, Omnitel had some 2,460,000 subscribers, compared with 713,000 at the end of 1996.

The increase in clients during the first week of 1998, some 40,000, is surprising because it is usually a very calm week of the year, the company noted.

The company currently covers 83% of the national territory, equal to 98% of the population.

According to the company, business and corporate subscribers represent some 25% of Omnitel's revenues.

Omnitel had a 35% share of the Italian GSM market at the end of the second quarter of 1997.

Omnitel Pronto Italia is a consortium led by Olivetti SpA that won the right in 1994 to operate the second cellular telephone concession in Italy. Olivetti has a controlling stake in Omnitel through its 50% stake in Omnitel Sistemi Radiocellulari, which in turn owns 70% of OPI. Bell Atlantic Corp (BEL), AirTouch Communications Inc. (ATI) and Germany's Mannesmann AG (G.MMW) are also partners in OPI.

Significant Developments: On Dec. 16, Chief Executive Silvio Scaglia said 1997 sales would exceed the ITL1.7 trillion forecast in September and that a second-half profit would cut the full-year loss to less than the ITL300 billion forecast.

At the end of September 1997, the company had 1.73 million subscribers.

In July 1997, the company closed on a ITL2.8 trillion project financing facility.

In December 1995, Omnitel signed a $100-million contract with Finnish electronics and industrial conglomerate Nokia Corp. (NOKA), making the latter the sole supplier of Omnitel's network infrastructure.
