Digital DEC.N sees FY98 net up, aided by deals

BOSTON, Jan 15 (Reuters) - Computer stalwart Digital Equipment Corp told analysts on a conference call that its settlement with Intel Corp INTC.O and $430 million sale of its networking unit to Cabletron Systems Inc CS.N will boost net about $0.30 per share beginning in the fourth quarter. Soundview Financial Corp analyst Gary Helmig said that Chief Executive Vincent Mullarkey told analysts on the teleconference he was comfortable with analysts' estimates of about $2.22 per share for fiscal 1998. A second analyst confirmed the figures. Digital did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. But Bruce Claflin, head of worldwide sales and marketing for Digital, told reporters on a separate conference call that sales in Asia fell by double digits in the second quarter after years of growing by double digits.
Mullarkey told reporters that he thought the situation in the Asia/Pacific region, which accounts for about 20 percent of the $13-billion company'ss overall revenues, had hit bottom.
Analyst Jay Stevens of Buckingham Research Group said he
was adjusting his earnings estimates in accordance with
Digital's guidance. "The Asia weakness was worse than I
thought," he said.
Digital reported Fiscal 1997 net income of $140.8 million,
or $0.68 per share, on revenues of $13.0 billion.
