Farmington and surrounds are the pits. I have no idea whether NM is a blue or red but it is definitely a depressing state. This is Walmart country. If prices inflate due to the trade war, I think these people would really feel it. Gas is 3.20 a gallon vs 4.70 in California. In upscale Durango, real estate is hurting. I know a group of people who retired to Durango 15-20 years ago. They all came out of the same mold - 60s or older, all reasonably comfortable, bought or built fancy houses, ski, bike, hike ...... Today they are too old for the active lifestyle and many are trying to sell. There are no lookers, not to mention buyers. I believe the current generation of retirees simply do not have the means to retire in places like Durango, even though $1 million can buy you >4000 sf custom houses. All the reports about how boomers having inadequate savings for retirement is certainly true in the case of Durango. On a side note, I read that Uber drivers averages less than $10/hour. If the economy is doing so great and unemployment so low, why are there more Uber-stickered cars zipping around than rats in Hong Kong?
