Russell, <<Mark ,, I personally do not use our health system very much. I do accept paying for it as a part of living here, I have no choice. One thing I see a lot of is Hyprocondia IMHO, as a result of loneliness, or God knows what, , being treated with very expensive medicines, for exotic problems.. This costs the system a huge amount of money and I believe is somewhat encouraged by the drug companies.>> No doubt the system is abused by individuals. I suspect though, that some of the problems you allude to, are problems in many other health care systems too. <<I am Canadian , and I feel that Gov't healthcare is a bit of panacia for society's F%$#@ed upedness. I personally would not hold up our healthcare as what's good about Canada over the U.S.>> This whole dialogue (as far as I was concerned) was not intended to lord over the US. For me, it was an exchange of views .... an exchange of ideas, concepts .... it was to suggest the world does offer alternatives to (in this case) the American model that have met with some success. The fact that it struck a nerve (for many Canadians and Americans), suggest to me, there is likely room for some innovative retstructuring on both our parts .... Canada's health care system, overall has been good to most Canadians .... but I am sure it can be improved. <<We are overtaxed>> Well ...in Ontario, the tax rates are going down - last year 15%, another 15% has been promised. That being said, when one views taxes relative to other industrialized countries, ours does not rank as bad as many would have you belive. <<over policed>> Got to agree here. <<we reward failure almost encourage it >> There is some truth to this ..... I would also say that we need to more fully recognize those that have achieved success. <<and we bail out our banks.>> I think that it is safe to say, this is a global practice. <<What we have is weather, our national heritage., No earthquakes, and provinces falling into oceans, and size, and Cdn Air Farce, and Lucien Bouchard, Oh, and WATER, Fresh WATER, better than gold anytime..>> Oh ...I think we have a little more than that. We have contributed much to the US space program, particlarly in the early years (after the Avro Arrow got canned) .... many of the scientists that worked on that leading edge technology in Canada, ended up working on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs - in significant roles. We developed the electron microscope. We developed the first good control for diabetes ... insulin at the University of Toronto. Telephone technology was developed here by Bell, in Nova Scotia .... in fact, I believe the light bulb was actually invented by a Canadian ... it was Thomas Edison that had the vision and foresight to buy the patent ... and bring it to the world. Had the firt commercial jet liner .... landed in New York (I beleive) on its first flight. Contributed immensely in the first and second wars .... at the end of the second world war, we had the world's fourth (or fith) largest Navy ... all from a country, that at the time, had a population of only 11 million. Lost more men to war (per capita) then any other western country ... Russia lost more than anybody. Have one of the world's premier children's hospitals - The Hospital for Sick Children. Have one of the premier heart hospitals in the world, in Ottawa. Have contributed significantly in keeping world peace, through negotiations and peace keeping missions. I could go on .... but I think my point has beem made. Best to all, MB
