i listened to the conference call earlier and liked what i heard. VLSI is executing its strategy and i think it's quite clear the stated expectations for 98 are conservative. VLSI has taken on an Intel-like strategy which should deliver respect from the street -- i.e., they are managing the street, promising only what thay know they can deliver. 7-10% year over year revenue, while maintaining 4Q97 margins, sounds to me like 98 will be outstanding! on asia, VLSI should be mostly immune. directly, VLSI is not being affected. only potential real exposure is customers' exposure. from the customers noted on the conference call i'm not sure there's much to worry about. lot's of folks have overstated ERICY's exposure, but ERICY says their exposure is like 20% and 17% is infrastructure (gov't contracts that are going forward).

three last points, VLSI conference mentioned that VLSI is strong on communications infrastructure in additon to handsets. (positive from an aisa risk perspective) also, i'm encouraged by the design wins re LANs; VLSI says don't expect any real growth 'til second half 98, but this seems real positive to me. malaysia project is going forward: malaysia partners say the executive branch supports the project strongly because it represents pro- local economy value-added industry. in any event, the malaysia joint venture won't affect 98 munder the current schedule.

just my $0.02 and probably worth about that much.
