Or maybe in two years from now 3DFX will have another chip called the VOODOO IV and maintain their lead. The problem with hayes was they didn't keep their edge. Other manufactures started coming out with faster more efficient modems and took the market. Now most modem makers are just coming off a standards fight which left thier inventories stack up. Besides modem are stuck at 56K for now. Any new modem manufacture will compete at the 56k point and further dilute the market. The story with sound cards is simple, how much better can they get? Imagine if Intel stopped at the 486. The market would be full of 486+ chips and they would be toast. I guess the point I'am trying to make is, if 3DFX can maintain a lead in performance ala INTEL, over their competitors. Then, they will be in good shape. If they reach a point where they can't or don't improve on their designs, then the market will catch up and get flooded. Right now they are in good shape with a performance lead and a mind share lead, if they keep this up, they should do well.
