NEC to defer start-up of new 300-millimeter wafer lines

AFX, Thursday, January 15, 1998 at 21:13

TOKYO (AFX-ASIA) - NEC Corp said it is to defer the start-up of new
300-millimetre wafer lines at its two microchip plants in Kanagawa and
Kumamoto prefectures.
NEC planned to launch a trial line of 300-milllimeter wafers at a
Kanagawa prefecture plant from mid-1998, but this has now been delayed, it
said.
"The reason for the delay is not the recent falls of memory prices," said
an NEC spokesman.
"It is because prices of manufacturing equipment of microchips for
300-millimeter wafers are still expensive."
Mass production of microchips, which can be used in 300-millimeter
wafers, was planned from the year to March 2000 at a plant in Kumamoto
prefecture, NEC said.
But, this will also be deferred, it said.
