[chat - how text wraparound works in SI]

#PEDANT ON

there are two conditions that can lead to SI displaying a message using a wider-than-normal window ("box"):

1) the poster selects the "Fixed Font" option. SI then displays the message using a monospace font *and* turns off word-wrapping. the width of the "box" is the width of the longest single "line" of text in the message. a "line" is a series of words followed by a carriage return (what you get when you hit the <Enter> key). for most SI postings, a "line" is a paragraph.

2) the message includes a "word" that is wider than the default window width. by "word" i mean a series of characters uninterupted by a SPACE, TAB, or carriage return, e.g. the string of hyphens in Milkman's message. since SI's word-wrapping doesn't "break up" or hyphenate words to maintain the default window width, the "box" will be as wide as the longest "big word".

good form, IMO, would be to limit use of Fixed Font to messages that include tables of numbers, and to avoid "big words" (usually fluff like Milkman's string of hyphens). makes it a lot easier for those of us without big screens or reading from notebooks.
