I bought some REITs last year and just started working on my tax return. I'd always used spreadsheets and it took only a few minutes each year to add new cells for changes in law or new kinds of investments. But it took me longer to incorporate REIT dividends and capital gains and it looks like it will take a lot of bookkeeping to keep things up to date. I knew about return of capital and adjustment to basis, but one dividend payment included a 1250 depreciation recapture. It took me about an hour at the IRS web site to figure out what to do with that.
That made me think about getting a packaged program. Could anyone on this thread recommend any, particularly one that is tied into a stock portfolio management program? I'm looking for something that is rather complete and just doesn't do only the basic forms. This year in addition to incorporating captial gains on REITS I will also have to do the foreign tax credit and child with income over $1300 forms.

Richard,

Do ya like TEE here with the dividend coming up? I guess I missed the move for MAA prior to its dividend. Too bad----nice dividend. What do ya think?? Leave it alone until next cycle?

Thanks,

Peter :o)

PS Do you do this with hi yielding closed end funds also?

I have not seen postings regarding RSE negotiating to acquire CPI. Being new to REITS I was wondering if this is not a newsworthy event

If a paired status is desirable and there are only a few of them, it would seem they would often be targeted for takeovers. The RSE/CPI coupling being an example.
HOT, MT, PAH and CPI are the only pairs I know of and all seem to be popular.
Bruce on the PAH thread gave an easy to understand explanation of "Paired" (PAH Post 16 FYI, anyone who does not know about them).

Richard, I must take this opportunity to tell you that you have been the single cause of my new found interest in REITS. Last week, looking for info on DSWLF, I came across a post of yours which eventually led me to the others on REITS. Instantly I became a captivated student.

Also, seeing you mention MT (on the PAH thread, as well) gives me some assurance. D date Jan 30 on record, I believe.

many thanks -Bell
