How marketmakers fix the stock

Ever wonder why Novell trades down all day and then pops up at the close on a market maker deal?

Yesterday the stock was trading down to 7 1/8 when all of a sudden a marketmaker comes in with a 7 3/8 trade. For Novell this is a big jump. I couldn't believe it. Two or three trades happened after the MM to bring the stock back in line where it was trading before the close.

So what were they trying to do. Probably move the stock up to increase the spread from 1/32 where it was most of yesterday. Give themselves more room. And guess where the stock opened today!

So when you see Novell jump at the close think twice about the cause.
