If you make people think, they will hate you. But if you make people think that you have made them think, then they will love you. I think this is the essence of Rand's popularity; she presents a superficial philosophy that glosses over many deeper truths but makes inexperienced readers think they have stumbled over some great meaning. Everything that we value in life always comes down to the people we value. Every moral and personality trait that we admire, be it loyalty, integrity, bravery, empathy, compassion, etc always comes down to relationships and collective good. Make these virtues a vice as Rand would, the world will not be worth living in. Thankfully, we have several deeply rooted biological imperatives to help us stay the course (e.g. mirror neurons). Unfortunately, we people like Rand and evil institutions busy researching ways to override our better nature.
