Warren claimed, like many from that part of Oklahoma, that she had an ancestor with American Indian heritage. My mom was born not too far from where Warren was and, guess what is one of the family legends? Some on the Right went bonkers over that and imagined that Warren used that legend to further her career, complete with making up examples of it. And then our mafia boss in chief adopted the same stuff because why not cater some more to overt racism? So now Liz has gone to the trouble of having a genetic analysis done. And she has some genetic markers that indicate her family legends about that ancestor are actually true. Now that makes our national cult leader look bad. So his supporters are engaging in all sort of mental gymnastics to "prove" he was actually right in his racist rants. Now it seems that the only way "Indian heritage" counts is if you can qualify for membership in a tribe. Which is very much moving of the goal posts. That isn't at all where things started. Qualifying for membership in the more prominent tribes, like the Cherokee, can be a tricky process. There are even cases where people who have lived on a reservation and had ancestors in the tribe for generations suddenly deemed insufficiently Indian to remain a member. For some of the smaller tribes, it isn't much of a problem. So there are a lot of politics involved. Other say "ah, but her percentage is about the same or less than the average white American, so Trump is vindicated!!1!". Which is also stupid. All that means is more Americans have Indian heritage than realize it. And it makes Trump's ragging on Liz even more stupid than it seemed if the odds of so many having Indian heritage is so high. Now, shall we get into how many have genetic markers from sub-Saharan Africa?
