Even then, she talks about being part Native American. She didn't claim tribal affiliation. She didn't claim to be full. She didn't claim to be a Native American. She did talk about possible Native American ancestry.

As I have noted before, my mom makes similar claims. She was born close to where Warren was, around Broken Bow, and the family legend is one of my ancestors walked the Trail of Tears and skipped out of the Indian Territories for Texas. Only to have a descendant return as a Sooner.

There is are also legends that we are related to Belle Starr.

Is either or both of those true? I have no idea. And no real way to prove things one way or another. Does it matter? Not to me.

Her story about her mother rings true. Because those sort of things were issues in that time and place. My grandmother on my mom's side used to claim the ancestor she thinks was of Cherokee descent was actually Black Irish to explain her skin color. Because being of Native American ancestry at that time and place was shameful.
