On CNBC US Investment Strategist for Morgan Stanley just discussed the Asian effect and said the it ISN'T going to have such a drastic effect on earnings as some have thought.

Specifically he used CPQ as an example of a company who's price has been wrongly hard hit and that (1) the cost of product production in asia has been reduced (increasing profitability) AND (2) Europe and Latin America have more than taken up any slack of any sales decline in asia.

THEREFORE, CPQ should have very good earnings and the share price should have some goood upward movement.

For short-term (to end of feb) may be because strong earns reports. But for IBM, CPQ and others will see today.
For mid-term (mar-apr) remember about ordinary business cycles in Q1 for major companies but it'll be named as "Asia flu". As result we'll be downturn there.
It's my mind.
What do you think about Merrill current forecasts ? I don't understand how can they estimates 1999 now. They don't have significant data for it.
