Xi elevation to Mao 2.0 last year did not help China, Bob. Now he fears losing face if he comes to the table and negotiate. Hopefully for the world economy they talk in Buenos Aires in the G-20. World economy needs stability.

I doubt very much the China trade war will be settled within the next year. Vendors have already received merchandise from Chinese manufacturers for the Christmas season. While the transit time from China is only 30 days, the delay for a container to get a spot on a ship at this time of year exceeds that, with additional transit time from Los Angeles to stocking a retailer's stores. Air-shipped items like laptops and phone are made only in China, and Apple successfully lobbied the Trump administration to exempt their Chinese-made phone from US tariffs. . While the Chinese stock market continues to melt-down, China see's Trump's trade-war as a national security threat, an attempt to curb China's political action rather than a commercial trade war, so things like the decline in their stock market are not an important issue to China's leaders. The trade-war with China has a very good chance of exceeding the duration of Trump's time in office as these policies develop their own constituency over time.
