Not correct. US is still a net importer of energy, specifically oil.

The gap has narrowed, but they are still net importers.

Agree with you, USA only needs imports due to mal investment of refiners types. During peak oil madness the thought was Venezooalian crude would always provide the cheapest sources, so refineries were built to advantage that presumption.
