British historian Paul Johnson (one of Maggie Thatcher's key advisors) has written quite a few outstanding books. My fav is Modern Times, read in late 2007 when I was about 1/3 through a 7-8 year self directed reading rampage to learn what common factors, if any, drive the decline and eventual collapse of major empires and civilizations. There's is a substantial literature of hi quality academic studies covering dozens of examples as far back as written records exist. And yes the common factors are quite striking.

Modern Times begins in the UK with a small group of radical and gay intellectuals at Cambridge University in the very early 1900s. From there he traces the development of all of todays social-economic, moral and political pathologies focusing on Europe & America. It was published in the late 1980s.

One of the most important themes - to which he returns repeatedly - is that Fascism always begins on the left. Always. A brilliant book. His erudition and ability to present a great variety and breadth of complex material, in an exceptionally insightful manner, is as dazzling as it is inspiring.
