I had to cut one of the old hoses off with a dremel tool. The other hose I managed to get off with channel-lock pliers. One thing that can be said is that flat sided connectors would be harder to cut off.

I would use a large pair of pliers to torque them tighter.
Yup. Use channel look pliers, but be careful not to torque it down too tight.
