Psychologist Erich Fromm coined the term Malignant Narcissist in 1964. Calling it - “The Quintessence of Evil”. Intensive study on the Malignant Narcissist was also done by the late Dr. Otto Kernberg. Dr. Craig Malkin and Ross Rosenberg also have some excellent information on youtube. To simplify it, think of this on a continuum: Narcissism, Malignant Narcissism and Psychopathy/APD.Malignant Narcissists appear to have all of the 9 main traits of Narcissistic Personality Disorder but…..what makes them even more dangerous is they show “overlapping” personality disorders, displaying sociopathic/psychopathic traits. (Lack of conscience, lack of affective empathy, very callous, etc). Malignant Narcissists are the MOST DANGEROUS NARCISSISTS. What will really blow your mind is that Malignant Narcissists often are able to be somewhat empathetic (selective empathy) to their chosen few. This can really throw even stronger, psychologically hip personalities off guard. They seem very “believable” and can be very protective of you in intervals. According to the experts in the field, Malignant Narcissists seem to want “Love” from their followers, audience and golden circles. They appear to have a certain intellectual empathy for those that are loyal, adoring, admiring. So, they can destroy lives, smear, humiliate, ruin those who stand in their way but will coddle their chosen ones (temporarily). They also tend to be more SADISTIC and show signs of Paranoia (envy, jealousy) than the more garden variety Narcissist. Malignant Narcissists also tend to be very vengeful, spiteful and vindictive if you confront them or they interpret a “slight”.Should you cross or disobey a Malignant Narcissist, you will be stunned and shocked at the lengths they will go to punish you. They are “injustice collectors” and the punishment is more severe than the crime. Of course the Psychopath/Sociopath is extremely dangerous too (remember all emotional, psychological abuse of any kind or level is dangerous). It is a matter of degree and frequency. It is often difficult even for professionals to officially diagnose a malignant Narcissist because they blur into Sociopathy at times.Remember: All individuals who are higher on the spectrum of Pathology (specifically Narcissism and Sociopaths) are going to cause relational harm. Even when they appear calm, collected and caring, never forget that they are often wolves in sheep’s clothing. Protect yourself and act accordingly.
