Glad you found a solution. Yes, old construction can have many surprises. We found gas light fixtures stored in a relative's attic that had apparently been installed in the home when it was new and then removed later. That house was single story, but had 12 foot ceilings throughout and had two fireplaces. Carbon monoxide is also lighter than air and that may have been a reason for the high ceilings.
