74% Downside Volume on the NYSE - 74% Downside Volume on the NASDAQ:

wsj.com

No one can know when any sell off will end in the stock market but determining when a truly solid market bottom is forming can be as simple as looking for a 90% upside day both in market volume and the number of issues hitting New Highs as opposed to New Lows. The current data is suggesting that this market sell off may have more downside. Why? Downside volume is swamping upside volume. In addition the number of new lows to New Highs is 528 to 8 on the NYSE. On the NASDAQ it is 446 to 19. These awful numbers could result in a market rebound at any time. In fact I fully expect the market to trade on to new highs. In the meantime I would expect a 2016 like bottom. In 2016 the bottom was market by two 80% upside days in close succession. The Investors Intelligence Poll also had more Bears than Bulls. We are not there yet. Maybe we won't get there? Time will tell. RtS

*Primary market NYSE, NYSE American or NYSE Arca only. †Compares the ratio of advancing to declining issues with the ratio of volume of shares rising and falling. Arms Index or TRIN = (advancing issues / declining issues) / (composite volume of advancing issues / composite volume of declining issues.) Generally, an Arms of less than 1.00 indicates buying demand; above 1.00 indicates selling pressure.
