LOOK AT THIS EVERYONE:

wired.com

I never really saw this angle but if it sells more webtv units, then so be it.

YOu know, now that I think about it, LEn really screwed the pooch when he was trying to describe the C6, no mention of "the low cost, hig perfomance alternative to the clunky over prtogrammed Pentium. No mention of Centaur's efforts in upgrading the chips features every 6 months or about the C6+. Hey, call me critical but if you are a proud parent, you're going to hype your kid like he's the best thing since sliced bread. I think next time Len is on CNBC, he should bring some of us along so we can add to what Len says on air if he misses a beat.

I talked with CL's local rep - he was excited but did not have a lot to say - he was under a non-disclosure to discuss much until next Monday. He agreed that CL could easily grow to several hundred millions in sales if they expand products and are able to perfrom as planned.

I just got off the phone to Don Knowlton (sp?) at Clear Logic (while I was typing this). Don said that the company has issued press releases and technical packets to the domestic and international trade press with the release date of Jan 19th. The way press releases work is that the editors get the release up to several days in advance of the official release date so that they can prepare for publication and develop articles. They agree not to release or "scoop" other publications by releasing the news early. The other tacit side of the agreement is that the company will not release details to the public early so that it does not scoop the press. That maintains the incentive for publishers to do articles and publish the 'new products' release - which is one of the best posible forms of advertising a semi tech company can get and it is basically free.

Don said that they had not specifically targeted investment trade press so it will be largely circumstance that the investment community press becomes aware of the announcement. The fact that IDTI owns 81% of CL and that it is otherwise privately held takes away the direct motivation for CL to announce to the investment community. I hope some people in the investment community take notice despite this.

Don said that the release and the CL website will include details about the technology used - both hardware and software aspects on Monday. CL will be open to discuss the details on Monday - so if any others are curious, don't hesitate to call their sales department or your local rep.

I anticipate a lot of coverage among the tech journals. Don said that in retrospect Monday was probably not the best day to have made the release offcial. This was set several weeks ago. We may find that TechWeb and other electronic arms of tech publications issue their articles over the weekend rather than on Monday. Issuing the weekend before a national holiday (MLK day), when the mails are shut down, would not be out of line.

The CL product has my curiosity way, way up. About 14 years ago I worked for Fairchild Semi. At the time they were trying to become a major player in what's called Standard Cell technology and they were working on the ability to convert customers PLD and custom circuits over to SC with little or no NRE charges and fast turn around times. That effort was probably way too premature and was half baked - the conversion software just was not ready for prime time. Several other ASIC mfgs have attempted to offer low cost conversion of PLDs and there is an active market for conversion of large volume business. What apparently makes CL unique is the high degree of integration of the design conversion and the process chip design capability (this is just my speculation at this point). I was able to capture a few details about how they go about this process and maximize production to keep costs low but I will wait to see the official press release and articles - to post unofficial stuff told in confidence would be in bad taste.
