Gary,
You know Intel has a roadmap and tries to stick to it...this opens them up to someone trying to head them off at the pass. Up 'till now no one has been able to it for very long. I'd say thats still the case...but AMD will try.

I think AMD's 3D extensions may well be very worthwhile. From what I understand, they are essentially similar to the MMX extensions, except that they are single precision, and therefore faster, than Intel's MMX extensions, which are double precision. Apparently what AMD determined was that for 3D games and screen graphics, precision doesn't matter, but speed does.

That said, based on the conference call contents, I am not sure that AMD will survive long enough for another generation of chips to see the light of volume production. Plus, Intel may get so far ahead of them that Intel's double precision may become faster than AMD's single precision.

Gary, re: How come it takes Intel such a long time (from MMX to MMX2) when AMD can do it so fast ? AMD people must be much more smarter than Intel guys.

To me, the whole thing just does not sound right.

Read my post for the intro decoder. Should make you feel better.
