Interest rates reflect the rate of dilution, varying economic pressures and the probability of dying of old age or for other reasons before spending one's savings.

With life expectancy at 70 years about 3% is a reasonable reward to cover that risk. Dilution by most countries runs at about 5%. So 8% is the minimum. With tax at 33% savers need 11% to justify savings.

No wonder there has been huge asset inflation.
