21st century opium wars. Interesting that USA people are so keen on poisoning themselves.

The USA should ponder why they are so keen rather than blame the manufacturers. Same with booze, smokes, dope, LSD, cocaine, toadstools, etc etc etc.

When poisons such as opium were legal, hardly anyone used them.

My theory is there's a coolness factor in breaking nanny state laws so the anti drugs laws paradoxically promote them. Add that to a lack of Virtuous Victorian Values and whatnot.
