At the Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 10, the two industry giants revealed a potentially far-reaching alliance. Microsoft has incorporated Motorola's paging protocols into its Windows CE operating system for consumer electronics devices. That software runs a new generation of palm-size and handheld computers -- and even gizmos made to fit into the dashboard of your car. For its part, Motorola has pledged to create a family of tiny paging cards that will hook up to Windows CE devices and connect them invisibly to desktop computers and networks -- including the Internet. With these two giants finally working in tandem, observers believe that sales of handheld computers could jump from 2 million last year to 5 million or even 10 million in 2000.
