Yes, microwaving would work just as well... and it's not as messy...

True story:

Believe it or not, the Japanese invented the microwave during WW II but they had no idea they could use it to cook food...

When they thought the U.S. was going to invade Japan, the Japanese wanted a way to protect very large areas of their shores... they came up with their "death ray" which would kill the enemy at a great distance and it wouldn't need reloading... it was actually the very first microwave but it was developed as a ray gun...
