No need to read some out of date article with one guy's opinion when I worked in the industry for many years.

If you ask about the charges and for a self pay rate, at most places you will get one. If you don't ask, you won't. Pretty simple.

It is the same concept as people who walk into a car dealer and pay sticker price rather than being smart enough to negotiate a lower price. The responsibility is yours. You have to act.

Shoot, two of my current physicians even advertise in their office to discuss self pay rates with them if you are not covered by the insurance they accept.
