Many of those people have to be heavily medicated to control their behaviors, it can be heartbreaking to see and to speak with some of them, but when you get one of them aside and into a private conversation they seem very normal... interestingly, the only way you could tell a patient from us is that we wore a tie, otherwise there was no observable difference, they all wore clothing, although I should also mention there were also a handful of patients who were very ill and could not even control their bowel movements... clinically, it was most definitely a valuable learning experience but frankly it was also deeply heartbreaking to see so many people with such broken lives... we have no real appreciation for how normal and how healthy we really are until we spend some time in that kind of environment... it was a tough learning experience, something I will never forget and for which I will always be grateful...
