Listen to that sound: It's the world being run by kindergarten geeks infoworld.com

But of course, we all know who the kindergarten geek in chief is. I sorta missed this one from esteemed ilk brother Robert X. Cringely at infoworld last weekend, I offer selected excerps before the new week's sardonic observations show up tomorrow.

Redmond kids say they're real sorry

It's been amusing to see Steve Ballmer hit the road in a series of "honestly, Ma, I didn't do anything" interviews in the geek press. When Ballmer tries to look gentle I'm reminded of that old feminist cartoon in which a man is shown peering at his shoe and saying, "Oh look, I trod on a woman."

Expect more pictures of billg patting dogs and kissing babies as the spin doctors of Redmond begin dry-cleaning the company's image.

A Herculean task, that.

Other kids still sore and grouchy

Even the irrepressible Steve Ballmer looked a little restrained during his recent chat with the fourth estate. His chastened appearance confirms a basic human truth about life even in these digital times: There's no substitute for being in the room with people.

Netscape's Barksdale and Andreessen looked noticeably the worse for wear at a recent media gathering, and their tired and slightly flat presentation was a great cue that poor financials were on the way. But perhaps it was all eyeliner and pancake. It has been suggested to me that Netscape exaggerated the extent of its recent losses by about $8 million in order to show some pain to Justice ("Look, Ma! It's bleeding!").

If so, expect a revitalized Netscape to fling off its bandages, wipe off the makeup, and emerge, Volpone-like, as a figure of rude health later this year. Well, perhaps not.

Redmond kids caught doing it again

Now that Janet Reno has tagged Microsoft the school bully it seems a shame that the company has decided to call its PalmPilot killer the, uh, Palm PC. I hear rumors that 3Com is actually thinking of suing Microsoft over the remarkable similarity of its name.

What? That would be terribly unfair! The resemblance is totally coincidental! A company claiming to own a common word, like, say, Windows? Or even better, 2 letters, like NT? Who ever heard of such a thing! Leave the lawyers out of this!

Cheers, Dan.
