I just finished reading a great book on the topic The Sword and the Scimitar. amazon.com It was many times and encompassed a millennium. It also included multiple ethnic groups: Arabs, turks, Moors, Mongols etc. They came in through Spain and also Constantinople which was under siege for hundreds of years until it fell in the 15th century. They also were aligned with some European groups who supplied them with slaves from Europe. Young blond and blue eyed women and children were preferred.
