James,
OK, where is the killer app. that you "need" a Pentium II-300 to run?

About 9 months ago Intelabees were pooh-poohing the idea that anyone would even want a sub-1000 PC. They actually thought that people were really happy paying $2k-$3k for a computer. About 6 months ago they started saying that the sub-$1000 market was just a FAD and that it wouldn't last. About three months ago the tune changed to hey, "we can compete in this market"...look...most of the Sub-1000 computers are Intel based. Now they are saying that...the sub-1000 market is a reality but Intel still make the big bucks because the sub-1000 buyers will upgrade to a high margin Pentium II chip.
WHO IS KIDDING WHO? <G>

Meanwhile, Intel over the course of the last year has gone from denying that the sub-1000 market even exits, to proposing a cachless P-II, to hoping that people that buy a cheap computer will upgrade to a high margin Pentium II...so they can make some bucks...
I guess you can rationalize everything..

All this says to me is that Intel is losing control of the market and price is becoming more and more the determinate factor...which is the way markets are supposed to work...
