I would call Microsoft tech support they are open till 1 am, 1-877-568-2495. And call HP tech support. MS will say they want to charge you for the service, but all the times I called them I was only billed one time. Call the experts. Microsoft does not charge for Windows Update issues. I don't think your systems problem were do to an update problem. Something else is going on. My advice is call the experts and see if then can help you.
