[Level 3 Communications, LEAF]

Level 3 Communications announces its intent to build out a 20,000 mile state-of-the-art fiber optic network, to be completed by the end of 1999. essentially, they're bidding to be another QWST.

an L3 thread has been started at techstocks.com.

from the CIEN perspective, L3's another large potential customer and further impetus for L3's competitors to beef up their infrastructures.

the WSJ article contains this comment:

"The new network will use the latest in fiber-optic technology, including laser transmitters and a new kind of fiber called LEAF, for Large Effective Area Fiber. The latter has advanced glass that allows information to be transmitted via laser light in more colors of the light spectrum than older glass fiber used by many established carriers."

can anyone shed light (no pun intended) on LEAF and whether CIEN's offerings play in a LEAF environment?
