When Sprint announced that it had built the first of Cisco Systems' (CSCO) new high-speed routers into its fiber-optic Internet
network, I felt that Cisco had successfully negotiated one of the most vulnerable moments in its recent history. It had
introduced a new generation of very fast routers -- the boxes that direct traffic on much of the Internet -- without cannibalizing
existing sales or giving competitors an opening. Since then, the company has continued to build momentum. In my
September 12 column, "Catching The Cisco Express," I calculated that at a split-adjusted price of $47.50 or less, buying
Cisco and holding it for a year is essentially risk-free. Full disclosure: I own shares of Cisco Systems.
