There are some dual 56K solutions starting to become available. For example, ISPs can offer Ascend equipment on their end and consumers can use a compatible dual line modem card(s) at the other end. The software arbitrates between the two lines/modems to deliver something around 95k total throughput. Outside of the equipment, hte cost would be around $40-50/month for the service. This alternative is unlikely to catch on with a large number of internet users but looks like a worthwhile alternative to some.
