Jim, re: Low end PC's

There is a big difference between:

"The whole home PC chip distribution is shifting to the lower end."

and:

"Doesn't the data show that sub-1000 pcs are taking a bigger chunk of the pie?"

A "bigger chunk" is not the "whole home PC distribution", there are still many buyers, probably the majority, buying PC's at $1200. to $1500, and more.

Where do you project home PC penetration to be at the end of 1998, from Dataquest's estimate of 45% today? Who will get the majority of these incremental sales, AMD, Cyrix of Intel? Of these companies, who will make money on it's sales?

Yes I'm sure Intel's ASP's will come down in 1998, they have admitted as much with their guidance for lower margins. The question is how many new purchases will be enabled by the new lower PC prices, and what will that mean to Intel gross profit.
