The middle went to Nixon because LBJ blew it with the war, Humphrey couldn’t figure out how to distance himself from that shitstorm, and because the left looked like crazy town when the Reps told the story starting with peaceful protesters and ending with the Weathermen. The middle went to Reagan because Carter couldn’t figure out how to get the hostages home, and Reagan was a much better communicator. Trump got the tiny section of the middle he needed to win the industrial Midwest by pointing out the Dems hadn’t done anything of note while US industrial jobs were outsourced big time. And because a significant chunk of the middle still isn’t ready for a strong national female leader. That’s why the Reps continue to use Pelosi as a punching bag - it works. The middle IS America, and if Dems can’t figure out how to meet them where they are, Reps will govern forever.
