I think where you grew up has a lot to do with it. I like to experience the full 4 seasons as is the case in the Appalachian mountains. When I lived in LA, the novelty of the perfect weather every day wore off fast.

The other thing is, are you a beach person or a mountains person. My brother is a beach person and he loved it in CA. He took on to sailing and became a much better sailor than I, even though I started before he did. I am a mountains person and prefer hiking and skiing.

I've found that this "mountain / beach" divide carries over to a lot of things in life and is more significant than rural/urban divide.
