Yeidckol Polevnsky, the leader of Lopez Obrador's leftist Morena party, broke the news to reporters outside Mexico's Supreme Court, multiple local outlets reported. "I found out yesterday that Trump confirmed," she said, according to Milenio newspaper. "The confirmation surely went to the transition team, it must have been to [incoming Foreign Secretary] Marcelo Ebrard." Trump is currently not scheduled to attend the inauguration, and Vice President Pence is slated to represent the administration in his stead. Argentine outlets Infobae and La Nacion r eported last week that Trump would attend the inauguration on Dec. 1, but those reports were brushed off as unfounded rumors by administration officials. To attend Lopez Obrador's inauguration, Trump would have to cut short his scheduled visit to Argentina for the G20 summit. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for clarification of Trump's schedule. Lopez Obrador invited more than 200 heads of state to the event, according to a report on El Universal newspaper. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro is among the guests who have confirmed their attendance. The Trump administration has ramped up sanctions against Maduro's regime, accusing Venezuela's government of profiting at the expense of its people. In October, national security advisEr John Bolton announced a gold embargo against key entities connected to Maduro, and labeled Venezuela, along with Cuba and Nicaragua, as part of a "Troika of Tyranny" in the Western Hemisphere. A senior Trump administration official told The Hill in October that Maduro's attendance would have no effect on Pence's plans. Polevnsky has in the past drawn criticism for her praise of the Venezuelan regime, particularly former President Hugo Chavez. Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel will also be attending Lopez Obrador's inauguration. thehill.com
