We are so much with words that we are conditioned to accept meaning. A word is simply a symbol that points to something. That something is beyond the word. Sometimes we may be able to see it, touch it, taste it. Sometimes not. In every case, whatever is pointed out can only be accessed at a superficial level (yes, even seeing, taste, touch ..... go only so far :) ). For example, one class of people may look at the term "super predator" in one way, and another class of people may look at that term in an entirely different way. So what really is the term pointing to? For one group it is positive, and for another it is negative. Well, some logical pointy-head will come along now and talk about this being reality, and something else not being reality. That again is a problem, because the only reality we may know at any given time is the ground we stand on, and even that may be gone in an instant. So pay attention to the language that people use and you will learn a lot about these people. You will learn about how they see the world and what they want, and what they want you to want. Here is something from Chuang Tzu that I love. I learned it from Merton. We have to get on our knees and thank the Universe for giants like Merton and Chuang Tzu. And a few others. Look to them for a way to solutions. The solutions may not be ones you are conditioned to want, but they will be the truest solutions. Pay great attention to the very last line. __________________________________________________________________________“Means and Ends” The gatekeeper in the capital city of Sung became such an expert mourner after his father’s death, and so emaciated himself with fasts and austerities, that he was promoted to high rank in order that he might serve as a model of ritual observance. As a result of this, his imitators so deprived themselves that half of them died. The others were not promoted. The purpose of a fish trap is to catch fish, and when the fish are caught, the trap is forgotten. The purpose of a rabbit snare it to catch rabbits. When the rabbits are caught, the snare is forgotten. The purpose of words is to convey ideas. When the ideas are grasped, the words are forgotten. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words? He is the one I would like to talk to.
