Lets not confuse the difference between broadcast video and business video. Video and voice over IP will be huge....make no mistake. This technology will continue to fuel the networking business for years to come. In the short term (read today) voice and video over IP are being used by numerous businesses successfully. From here the technology gets even better - even at low bit rates. Businesses worldwide will begin using IP WAN's for business to business traffic due to the cost effective nature of putting all service needs over a single infrastructure. This will happen... Excuse me, this IS happening.

For broadcast purposes bigger pipes will be required, no doubt. This however is a more consumer-ish target. Chances are the existing cable TV infratstrucutre will be leveraged to take advantage of this allowing voice, video, internet, and other services to travel from a delivery site to either a home or business or business to business all using IP. Look to this to continue fueling the networking sector begining in 3 to 5 years and continuing for 10-20 years beyond.

Go CISCO!!!

Collateral topic:

Re: broadcast television

I recently read a report that stated that a big untold story is that broadcasters are collectively worth about $70 billion more than currently recognized. The reason is that they will be able to use part of their recently acquired HDTV spectrum to become major data broadcasters as well.

Have you heard of this? I've got the report buried somewhere.
