Robert,
Re -- Some Taiwan-based computer makers are planning to use such less-expensive non-Intel microchips.

A ringing endorsement one would say "planning to use"? Furthermore, Cyrix/AMD may sell their chips for a lower price than Intel's pentium, but they cost more to make. Thus Intel has room if it chooses, to sell pentiums really cheap for the settop market (the context of the previous post). Which by the way is currently a different market from the PC market and would only be additional gravy.

Meanwhile cyrix/NSM will continue to lose money. Its the economies of scale you understand.

I listened to a spot on National Public Radio this evening discussing the growth of the sub 1K market. The story was centered on the point that these systems are fully capable of running all home applications very well (I would argue most business applications as well). It also made the point that these systems would have been considered near top of the line systems just months ago. The story mentioned both Cyrix and AMD by name in reference to the Compaq models. They must have mentioned Intel as well, but I cannot remember.

Exposure like this in more main stream sources will likely do more good and sway more opinion as all the bench marks in the techno journals and certainly more so than the debates on this thread and others.
