In case you’re wondering how we eventually crossed the street... we didn’t wait for a lull in traffic. We walked into the street slowly but deliberately, and all the drivers simply made their way around us. Try it, it works. We found the perfect cure for jet lag... take a taxi around Saigon at rush hour. Voila! No more jet lag. It’s a riveting experience. I’ve had more near-death experiences in the last 3 days than I had previously in my entire life. Well, maybe they don’t really qualify as near-death, but heart-stoppers are...hmmm... yeah, pretty similar.

The best photo opportunities always come when the camera isn’t ready. While visiting our friend on the outskirts of Saigon I asked her son-in-law to show me around the neighborhood.. a 15 minute walk, I expected, around a boring neighborhood. Instead he offered me a ride on his motorbike. We rode around for only 20 minutes but we saw more than I imagined I could see in days! We drove by markets, fancy shopping malls, and then went by the most miserable homeless encampment I’ve ever seen. The encampment was next to a cemetery, this was the day after Halloween, and there was a big meat market . You want pork? You can have pork. You want chicken? Alive or dead, or somewhere in between, it’s there. How about dog meat? No problem! Don’t fancy dog? How about cat? And so much more! I didn’t ask if anyone had ghoul.
